The Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate announces Perpetual Profession of Vows of Brother Adam Zawadzki OP Miss. on August 29th at Aquinas Institute of Theology. in St. Louis, MO. The Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate can be described as follows:
We are Dominican. Our Charism is to preach in the tradition of St. Dominic.
We are Missionaries. This simply means we are not tied to one single parish or one area. Our mission is to go out to meet the people.
We are for the Deaf Apostolate. Apostolate is a fancy word which simply means work or ministry. Our ministry, our mission, our life is centered on Deaf Ministry. In the Church which founded Deaf Education in the United States, we see surprisingly few dioceses have Deaf Ministry. It is our mission, as we train more and more men to become priests and brothers, to remedy this sad statistic.
Brother Adam Zawadzki grew up in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish. His parents, Jan and Paul, are active members here. He discerned a calling to learn American Sign Language (ASL) at Vincennes University’s satellite school at the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis, and spent two years learning ASL in VU’s Program, graduating with an AA Degree in ASL. Only a few short months later, Brother Adam moved to California to join the Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate.
Following is Brother Adam’s insight: If I could say one thing to help in anyone’s discernment or prayer life, it would be this: Mean what you pray. When you pray the Our Father, and you say, “Forgive us our trespasses (sin) as we forgive those who trespass (sin) against us...” Think about what you are really saying. You are asking God to forgive you in the same way that you forgive others. When you pray the confession of your sins during mass (I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters...) Think about all the sins you have committed. Be truly sorry. It isn’t easy, but it is amazingly powerful.
Congratulations to Brother Adam, and I would also like to extend my congratulations to Adam’s parents, Jan and Paul Zawadzki, for raising this exceptional young man!
